Acid Reflux While Pregnant
Nov 21st, 2009 | By Free Traffic System | Category: Heartburn/GERDIf you ever heard someone talking about heartburn, it seems as though everyone has experienced it before. Some people have it more than others. I’ve never experienced heartburn while pregnant because it’s my wife who is going through this right now. While in her first pregnancy, she had heartburn all the time and so did I. This is one subject that I’m a pro at and get to share the experience with her.
Real briefly let me explain my background. I’ve had acid reflux or GERD for ten years now. In this time I have tested or heard just about everything and anything. There is going to be some remedies that will work for you and some that won’t. It all depends on you and your body, everyone is different.
First off, if you have heartburn while pregnant than there is some facts that we need to look at to understand why. How many months until your due? The reason why I ask this question is because if you are already showing than there is going to be pressure against your stomach. Indigestion is also increased in obesity because of this reason as well. Also if have heartburn while pregnant than there is going to be some extra hormones produced by the placenta. The placenta will produce a hormone called progesterone, which relaxes the muscles of the uterus. This hormone will also relax the valve that separates the esophagus from the stomach, allowing gastric acids to seep back up.
Secondly, we need to look at your diet. You’ve all heard that spicy food is bad for heartburn. In my case that isn’t true. It’s all about quality of food over quantity. If I eat to fast and fill up on junk food, you can pretty much guaranty that I will get heartburn. Now if I eat a salad with a glass of water, I will not. It doesn’t matter if I even have Italian dressing on it, even though it has a high acidic level. Also make sure you eat and drink slow. The idea here is to have a bunch of small meals throughout the day versus three big meals. It is also important not to forget breakfast. The earlier you can eat the better because it will speed up your metabolism.
Lastly, there is something that has happened recently that I have noticed. We started getting heartburn before we ate anything around lunch time. Usually happens when I skip breakfast. Well I thought, I need to eat and always do but eat light. For some reason my heartburn goes away in these instances. Have no idea why this happens but I always can imagine it’s because the stomach acid keeps building and doesn’t have any food to attack.
My general opinion on why heartburn forms is because the body doesn’t regulate the amount of stomach acid properly. Having heartburn while pregnant is going to be temporary anyway, right? We all are going to have this body for a long time, need to make it right.
