Having Acne During Pregnancy
May 31st, 2010 | By Contributor | Category: AcneWomen have special concerns in terms of acne. Females often have acne well into middle age. Even those who never had acne as teens may have it later on in life. There are several different causes of this.
Since hormone fluctuations play a big role in causing acne, individuals notice differences in their acne when their hormones experience changes. Girls have a lot of hormonal changes in their day-to-day lives, so they’re major candidates for acne flare-ups.
A female may have a cycle of acne that goes along with her period. The hormones progesterone and estrogen are created by their ovaries in various amounts depending on every point in the cycle. As the 2 hormones vary, the symptoms of the acne vary along with them.
For most adult females, the flare-ups are premenstrual. In other words, their acne is the worst right before and in the beginning of their periods. When it comes to the ends of women’s cycles, the acne tends to dissapear.
One method that is proposed for this phenomenon is taking birth control pills. Some birth control pills advertise that they control acne. It has not been settled by investigation just how effective these pills are. Most adult females and dermatologists claim that they do work.
Other aspects that have an effect on women are polycystic ovary disease and stress. When females have polycystic ovary disease, it alters their hormonal output. This leads to acne flare-ups. As for the stress, adult females are often put in high stress positions, especially if they are trying to work in an intense job and raise a family simultaneously. The stress can affect their hormones, which in turn results in acne problems.
Females may have acne for the first time in their lives once they become pregnant. The worst time is throughout the first two trimesters of being pregnant. It may last through the entire pregnancy, though. If the mother breastfeeds, it could last during that time too.
The main reason women of all ages have acne in pregnancy is that the levels of progesterone are in full swing. This hormone does many jobs within the pregnancy. It makes the uterus ready for the fertilized egg to implant on its surface.
Progesterone will make the smooth muscles relax to avoid labor from happening too early. It’ll also relax the joints to get the body prepared for delivery. In addition, progesterone is a more androgenic hormone than estrogen, so it cranks up the sebum-making sebaceous glands and leads to acne breakouts.
In case you are a pregnant woman with acne, you don’t have as most treatment options as you would if you were not expecting. The oral medications and most topical medications are out, because they have unwanted side effects that will cause harm to your fetus. Even preparations with huge amounts of aloe vera can be unsafe. You’re better off to use only careful cleansing, benzoyl peroxide, and consuming lots of water to stay hydrated.
