How Does the Immune System Work?

Sep 22nd, 2006 | By admin | Category: Health News

The immune system…your vigilant guard to all things toxic and illness-producing.
Just how does the immune system work? What cripples it? Does stress affect the immune system? What about nutrition?…drugs?..environmental poisons?…bacteria?..virus?
Of course all these things have their individual roles to play..whether it be positive or negative.
I think the burning questions for most [...]

Treating malaria with e-mail

Sep 21st, 2006 | By admin | Category: Health Articles

A bit old - 2004 - but it gave me a good laugh at the time.
The study describes 5 patients with malaria, with management followed up with the OptiMAL dipstick test.
Patients 1 and 4 were treated with intravenous quinine; patient 5 was treated with chloroquine; and patients 2 and 3 were given e-mail.

A second patient [...]

Sep 21st, 2006 | By admin | Category: Health Articles, Men's Health, Sexual Health, Wellness & Lifestyle Articles

A recent blog by Dr. Louanne Cole Weston on why women don’t want sex had me thinking. What about the guys? Don’t our feelings count? Isn’t it important what the men want and feel? Why is all the attention about when women want or don’t want sex? What about our needs? Isn’t the man supposed [...]

Sep 20th, 2006 | By admin | Category: Health News

I just read that the Chinese performed a breakthrough penile transplant. Though unsuccessful, this raises many questions that remain unanswered.
First of all, who said “Hey, sure I’d love to donate my penis to a total stranger!”
Or what about being an organ donor? We all think of giving up our heart or kidneys or even pancreas. [...]

Opt-out HIV testing

Sep 17th, 2006 | By admin | Category: Aids / HIV, Health Articles

I think the opt-out system of HIV testing is a fairly good idea.  Of course, it will have to be looked at carefully, and checks put in place to ensure confidentiality and avoidance of stigma.  That is something I am not sure South Africa is ready for, but I’m also not sure that it isn’t [...]

Sep 16th, 2006 | By admin | Category: Aids / HIV, Health Articles

In the recent August 2006 Transcript, the newsletter of the Southern African HIV Clinicians Society, the following article by Supreme Court Judge Edwin Cameron caught my attention.  I’ve posted it here with his permission.

CounterThoughts: Water on airplanes, drive-through Rx and doctor appointments (satire)

Sep 14th, 2006 | By admin | Category: Health News

What are CounterThoughts? They’re the commonsense questions you ask yourself when you see something in the world that just doesn’t make any sense. They’re a glitch in the Matrix. You know, like when you see a sign on the road that says, “Men at Work” but they’re all just standing around definitely not…

Lessons from 9/11: 5 Bullets to Kill Terror

Sep 12th, 2006 | By admin | Category: Health News

It all starts with understanding the goal of the terrorists - to cripple us with fear. Terrorists aren’t celebrating the destruction of a building or the death of a few innocent souls. What they thrive on, what drives them to spend years planning an attack, is the desire for sheer and total panic and fear [...]
